Guest Post: Edmonton Startup Week is Almost Here! Oct. 17-21

Special guest post from the organizers of Edmonton Startup Week…

Edmonton Startup Week is a special time for the Startup Edmonton team. We’re busy planning events, but mostly we’re super excited to celebrate the amazing community and founders that we have the honour of working with every day. With more than 20 events including talks, workshops, mentorship, socials and more – there really is something for everyone.

We look forward to seeing you at a bunch of events. There are lots to choose from and we’re more than happy to make some recommendations.

Tiffany Linke-Boyko, CEO | Launch Party 7 | Thursday, October 20

Launch Party is my favourite event of the year and it’s incredible to think that we’re on our seventh edition. Over the years, Launch Party has become a community tradition and it’s often one of the first chances you have to meet the companies that have a lasting impact on our technology and business community.

It’s truly a party – great food, drinks and music and the chance to demo products and meet the people working hard to create companies from the ground up.

See you there on Thursday, October 20!

Warren Johnston, Community Manager | Job Mixer | Tuesday, October 18
I work with students year-round and one of the best events we hold is our Job Mixer at the University of Alberta. It’s a chance to meet hiring startups, get to know their teams and learn about what it takes to work at a fast growing company.

Working for a startup is a great opportunity to gain a lot of responsibility quickly in your career. Plus, having a hand in building something customers will interact with changes the way you think about the impact of your work.

Even if you’re not a student, come and check out the Job Mixer. Startups and scaling companies are looking for all kinds of talent, just like you. Plus, there’s pizza, awesome company t-shirts and stickers.

Lauren Briske, Community Manager | Startup Crawl | Tuesday, October 18
One of the best parts of my work at Startup Edmonton is getting to know our community, program and company members really well! Startup Crawl is an awesome way for everyone to get to know some of the startup companies in an informal setting over beers! We take a big group door-to-door to meet teams, check out work spaces and connect over the opportunities and challenges of building tech products.

If you’re thinking about working for a startup, interested in getting an idea started or just curious about what happens at some of our city’s fastest growing companies, I encourage you to come out! I’ll be there to help you meet new people and share some of the reasons why I’m so passionate about our community.

Tim O’Shea and Rich Maloy, gurus of community building who were involved in the original Startup Week that took place in Boulder, Colorado. These guys have a passion for building community in their city and helping other communities do the same.

Stephanie Enders, Manager
Startup Communities Lunch with Dr. Ruthie D. Lyle | Wednesday, October 19
Connecting with other startup communities is something I really treasure about our connection to the Global Startup Week community fostered by Techstars. In celebration of this mandate, each year of Edmonton Startup Week we invite our friends from other communities to share their experience with us.

Building on the momentum of our guests from Boulder and Reykjavik, this year we’re over the moon to have Dr. Ruthie D. Lyle come from Raleigh, North Carolina. I had a chance to hear Ruthie speak while visiting Boston and I was most taken by the insight she was able to inspire by asking great questions.

Ruthie is Lead Research Engineer with USAA. She also happens to have 119 patents and is the first African American woman to earn a doctorate in Electrical Engineering from New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering!

Here are some of the highlights of last year’s event:
